8th and 7th grade Social Studies
Mrs. Malavolti Room 206
8th Grade American History: Welcome! This year we will be working together to discover this history if America's beginnings through the Civil War. Our goal in class will not be just to identify facts, but to analyze and understand how and why events happened.
7th Grade Eastern World: Welcome! This year we will be working together to discover the history of the ancient civilizations of the world. Our goal in class will not be just to identify facts, but to analyze and understand how and why these civilizations developed and collapsed.
I am very excited about this school year and I hope you are as well. I am passionate about social studies and I hope to persuade some of you non-lovers to discover a new interest in it.
Materials:
~You will need either a three ring binder or a folder to organize all your papers on a daily basis.
~You will need to bring your textbook EVERY DAY.
~You will need a notebook or lined paper EVERY DAY.
~You will need to bring a pen or pencil EVERY DAY.
~We all use plenty of tissues and hand sanitizer throughout the year. This district is providing the hand sanitizer, but I ask that you please bring one box of tissue to donate to the class so that we may keep germs at bay. It is not required but would be greatly appreciated so that we may have a clean and comfortable classroom.
Classroom Procedures:
The following is a list of general classroom procedures:
~ID’s MUST be worn in class EVERY DAY or you will be asked to go to the office.
~When class begins, every student is expected to be in their seat and prepared to learn.
If you are absent, you are responsible for getting the previous day’s notes/assignments.
~Students should sharpen pencils, get supplies or tissues and use passes at “appropriate” times.
~No students will be allowed to use the restroom or go to their locker the first or last 10 minutes of class.
~All students must remain in their assigned seats at the end of the hour in order to be dismissed. NO LINING UP AT THE DOOR!
Class Rules:
~ Be on time, prepared & on task to learn everyday.
~Keep all electronics put away unless given specific permission to use for educational purposes.
~Respect authority, the classroom and each other.
~Be responsible for your own learning.
~Trash goes in the trash can #notpaidtobeyourmaid.
~wear your ID, always.
~Your agenda = your hall pass.
~Students will be expected to follow the school rules at all times.
~Remember to be respectful, responsible and resourceful and we will have a positive learning experience.
Substitutes:
When a guest teacher is in the room, I expect you to be respectful and on your best behavior. Any names that are left for any reason will receive a phone call home as well as a detention. If names are left a second time you will receive a referral.
Copying and Plagiarism:
In the instance of copying homework or a take-home assignment, BOTH people involved will receive a zero on the assignment, a detention, a phone call home, and a referral. In the instance of copying during a quiz or test, or copying information off of the Internet or another source (plagiarism), the person who copies will receive a zero on the quiz or test, a detention, a phone call home, and a referral.
Grading:
Grading will be done using a total point system and recorded in the Power School program. I will let you know how much each homework assignment, project, quiz, test, or other take-home assessment is worth, and then your grade will be computed by dividing the number of points you received by the number of possible points. The following is a base plan for my grading policy.
~Assessments (quizzes, tests, projects, take-home assessments) will account for 75%+ of the overall grade.
~Homework assignments will account for no more than 25% of the overall grade.
~Missing take-home assessments will be entered in the grade book as a 0% for your grade.
Late work:
I accept late work up until the day of the test. Late take home assessments will be given a deadline date. Test corrections are available when necessary.
Absences:
If you are absent from class, it is your responsibility to find out what you missed in class. When you return, you need to make sure that you get any notes from class that day from a classmate. If you are still unsure of what you missed, please come and talk to me before or after class, and I will explain it to you. If you are unsure of material covered after this point, you may want to set up a time before or after school to come in for extra help. You are not excused from any material or test/quiz questions due to an absence! It is expected that you will make up any quiz/test you missed the day you return!
Extra Help: If you ever feel confused about anything we have covered in class, or if you would just like me to explain something again, please come in for extra help! Just tell me when you would like extra help, and we will set up a time before or after school when we can go over the material together. My lesson plans and homework can be reviewed on my classroom webpage at Malavolti.weebly.com
I hope you are as excited as I am for the 2021-2022 school year!
